What is an adjustment? And what does it do?

An adjustment, whether performed to the spine or another joint, is a safe and controlled maneuver that is specifically done to increase the range of motion of a joint and all its components. By increasing the range of motion and, therefore, function of a joint, you allow healing, decrease pain and muscle spasms, and increase longevity of that area. If you leave our office learning one thing, it is that joints must move in order to stay healthy!

What is the “popping” noise?

Gas! Some types of manipulation have a high velocity low amplitude movement that creates a low pressure phenomenon inside the joint, causing gas within the joint fluid to rush out and create a “pop”.

Once I go, do I always have to go?

No. But many people do choose to set up routine checkups because they understand how important chiropractic care is. Just like going to the dentist. Think of chiropractic treatment as another form of exercise for your spine. Exercise is something that must always be done in order to stay healthy. The only way to keep your spine functioning at its highest potential is through manipulation.

Can I go if I have severe pain?

Yes! Your chiropractor will always make sure you are in the right place for care. If he feels you need further testing or another opinion he will send you promptly. Our doctors manage acute musculoskeletal pain often with different treatments ranging from ice, light muscle stimulation, easy stretches, gentle mobilization and other comforting techniques.

Why should I choose chiropractic and not physical therapy?

Chiropractic manipulation has been shown through research and clinical practice to be one of the most helpful treatments for “axial” pain. This is pain that originates from your spine. Our doctors and office are equipped to take you from the very beginning of care, which usually focuses on decreasing pain and increasing range of motion, to the very end of care by improving function and strengthening injured areas using resistance exercise and cardiovascular conditioning. If our doctors feel that you should see a physical therapist we have good working relationships with many in the area.

Do I need a referral?

Maybe! Most insurance companies DO NOT require you to have a referral to see the chiropractor. When you call to schedule your appointment our staff will verify your insurance and find out for you. Don’t worry if you don’t know what your insurance covers. Our staff is here to help you so you can focus on feeling better.
